This marvellous Wenlock poetry festival (whose founding patron is our Poet Laureate) has managed to accidentally clash with the Royal Wedding and is another wonderful alternative to the outpourings of nationalistic fervour characterising the Wedding. Performers include Carol Ann Duffy and Simon Armitage, with prizes for the winners of the festival’s National Poetry Competition. There’s a poetry slam for people who prefer punchy poetry, and some readings by local talent.
There is a Poetree – where you can either write a line from your favourite poem or create something original, and attach it to the tree. There will also be Choir performances, exhibitions by art gallery Twenty Twenty, a ‘Knit a Poem’ session at Ippikins Yarn shop and lots of fun at Wenlock Books. If you’re going to go, book your holiday accommodation in Wenlock.
